Cat Safety
As a cat owner, it is your responsibility to keep your cat out of harm’s way. Taking a few precautions and following some safety tips can help keep your cat safe and secure. Also being aware of your cat’s needs and wants will drastically increase your cat’s well being and safety.
Whether you have an indoor or outdoor cat, it is very important to “kitty proof” your house. Even cats that spend most of their lives inside are exposed to a number of potential hazards. Creating a cat friendly home isn’t difficult and mostly involves common sense. If you have children, you probably have already child proofed your house, which is basically identical to making a safe environment for your cat.
Here are a few tips to keeping your cat safe in your home:
- Don’t keep poisonous plants in areas where your cat could get to them and ingest them.
- Never keep household cleaning products in areas that your cat can access.
- Store medications in areas that your cat cannot access.
- Keep sharp objects such as knives and forks out of your cat’s reach.
- Make sure there are no small objects left anywhere your cat can get to and swallow them.
- Keep all automotive products out of cat’s reach.
- Keep your cat off the lawn after fertilizing or any other treatments until dried.
In case of an emergency, it is very important to remain calm and get your cat to your veterinarian’s office immediately. If the office is closed, find the nearest animal hospital and get there immediately. It is a good idea to keep your vet’s phone number as well as other emergency numbers somewhere handy so they are easy to get to if you ever need them.
